Jackson Emmer’s lyrically playful and intimate Americana style is as gleeful as it is irreverent. Combining an authentic country spirit with an honest and modern perspective, Emmer connects with listeners in the time-honored storytelling tradition. His songs range from tender ballads to crispy barnburners, nonsense ramblings, to wicked feats of English. He lives in Asheville, NC.
At the age of 13 Jackson Emmer heard Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady” and was inspired to take up guitar. Immediately, he became obsessed with playing, and music in general. His first public concert was at Steve’s Guitars in Carbondale, CO at the age of 16. By 18, he had a weekly gig with a local blues band. Not old enough to drink, Emmer had sneak in the back door of the bar each night for the gig.
While attending Bennington College, Emmer heard fellow student Trevor Wilson perform and was again, struck. His passion turned to songs, singing, folk and avant garde music. He daydreamed in song.
Raised with a DIY artist ethos, it wasn’t long before Emmer began making his own albums at home, releasing them, and booking his own tours. In 2010 he embarked on his first solo tour, writing songs for trade with people along the way. For dinner and a place to stay for the evening, Emmer would write his host a personal tune and these songs became the basis of his early records. While touring for two years, Emmer garnered a modest following.
In late 2012 Emmer found himself broke and returned to Colorado to live in his parent’s basement, and work on his craft. He found success as a bandleader for private events and upscale bars in Aspen, CO. Eventually, Emmer founded the “Americana Music Series” at Justice Snow’s, which led him deeper into the country music canon. During this time, Emmer wrote music every day, and performed roughly 150 dates a year. From hotel bars, to breweries, to weddings and birthday parties- those years in Colorado fortified Emmer’s performance style, his writing, and his sense of song.
In 2015, Emmer moved to Asheville, NC with his wife to be closer to her family. North Carolina’s deep musical history has long inspired Emmer, and he’s enjoying learning from it firsthand. His focus has returned to original music, but he keeps one eye on tradition, and the other on the horizon.
